CHAPTER SIX

Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light.

George Washington

“Leave me alone! I don’t want to have anything to do with you, do you understand?” Her voice was trembling with emotion but there was no mistaking the determined insistence or flat notes of hard anger. She swapped the phone from one hand to the other, pressing it against her ear again as he spoke.

“I know you don’t mean that. Please don’t say that, my darling Kelpie.” His voice was soft, filled with pain and an almost childlike distress that someone could inflict such cruelty upon him.

“I mean it, all right!” she yelled. “And don’t call me that stupid name!”

“But, Kelpie, I—”

“Shut up and listen! I’ve just seen Hamish Macbeth and his new sidekick walking into Hibbert’s old cottage. If they find out…”

“They won’t find out anything, Kelpie, honestly. You’re worrying too much.”

“It’s you that should be worried! If they come up with anything, I’m not going to be the only one to suffer—I’ll make sure you do, too! Now stay away from me, or I might just decide to have a wee word with Macbeth anyway!”

She hung up, viciously jabbing the button to end the call and then dropping the phone, as though hoping that any lingering echoes of his voice clinging to it would be eradicated by the clatter when it hit the floor. What was she going to do? It was all such a mess! Macbeth was going to find out, she was sure of it, and that would mean the end of everything.
